This triptych by Kobayashi Kiyochika, an important innovator in Meiji era prints, portrays the arrival of the Imperial prince, who is greeted by the empress whose ladies-in-waiting stand behind her. One holds a gift covered by a red cloth. Kiyochika's prints were influenced by his study of European artistic techniques which contributed toward his original approach to print design. Here the figures and in particular, the unusual treatment of the sky, reflect his study of Western watercolor technique.
